Default Marriage License

I was researching today, and I discovered that I have to have an physical examination to get my marriage license. He doesn't. WTF is up with that?!?! It's bull crap...why does the female have to do it and the male doesn't? Futhermore, why do I need one to get married? Stupid laws.

That's odd. Is it something where his physical is up to date enough? Or is it just one of those old fashioned repressive "He's marrying her and he deserves to know if he's got a defective one" things?

Oklahoma used to have both bride and groom take blood test to see if either has a sexually transmitted disease or any other disease that was not known. Hello, we just wanna get married. Luckily they got rid of that law about a year and a half ago. Just in time.

Sorry you have to go through this, i know it sucks.

WTF???

I have never heard of anything like that! That's really strange... I wonder how common it is over there for them to do that...

All we have to do is register our documents (birth, divorce etc) with the local government office withing 3 months of the wedding; then go to the office within a week of the wedding to collect the licence in person. Someone has to return it within another seven days and we're all done.

Of course the church or where ever you are getting married has to see your documents too; and they generally ask a bit more of you but I've never, ever heard of needing a medical!

You made me check about my county to see. They use to make you have blood test here but they stop that about 2 years ago. Now there is nothing you have to do besides bring in your Birth Cer. Thats crazy they make the bride have test and the groom don't have to.

@ CW. I am defective, but he already knows that. This is what I have found in several places:
Other Tests: Women under the age of 50 must bring a completed State of Indiana Premarital Examination Certificate. These are available through your family doctor or any RediMed, StatCare, or other urgent care clinic. Blood tests or premarital examinations for men are not required.

Go Indiana! NOT Oh, and I found this too.

Cousin Marriages: Permitted when both individuals are at least sixty-five (65) years of age. Yeah...not going there.

Ca use to require a blood test too. The main focus was testing the blood for something that had to do with pregnancies... it was so they could notify you in advance if you carried a certain gene (I think) that would make pregnancy difficult for you.

I can't believe the restrictions that some states still have. It's so old school.

Cousins can get married in NY????? 2nd counsins and down the line correct?

It just struck me as odd that there's even a rule for cousin marriages nowadays...guess I shouldn't be suprised.

My cousin is dating one of our like 5th or 6th cousins!!! They had been dating for about 2 months before they put it together, I mean, it is 5th or 6th... But we still like to give him a hard time.. Everytime he hugs me hello I tell him "Sorry Rickey, I'm married already!"

I think you can marry your first cousin over here!

I've only heard of cousins dating once in my area and it was a huge source of gossip!

If you found the marriage license information on-line, you might want to call the office where you will get your marriage license. Web sites are notorious for not updating information. The idea of a blood test (measles were one big thing they checked for because of the prevalence of birth defects that can occur if a woman has never had measles and gets them when she is pregnant), but a physical is really old fashioned. If that is still true, it sounds like a letter to your state legislator may be in order.

dude, that's so stupid! I would definetely call your state legislator or write a letter; that is so misogynistic.

Did you call and ask them today? I just called to check and see if what I found on-line was the truth. On-line it said to bring your Birth cer. and SS card and Driver Lic. When I called all you have to being is a valid state lic. or id card. If you have been married b-4 the divorce had to be on file.

CW you are sooooo right! I just confirmed that one!

I still can't believe that. It's funny that in some of those states you can't marry a first cousin but having 10 wives is ok. Odd.

No, I haven't called yet. But I did see the same info in a brochure for a bridal show I went to recently. But I'll let you know what I find out.
