Bridal Shower Themes
Are you hosting a bridal or wedding shower? Have absolutely no clue on where to begin? Don't fret! Most showers have a theme or overall motif such as a "lingerie" or "time of the day" theme. There are many possibilities and the only limit you have is your imagination!

"Entertainment" Shower

My daughter was married last year and she and my son in-law worked at the same place so their co-workers decided to give them an "Entertainment Shower." He was joining the coast guard and they knew he would be traveling and they would have to have something to entertain people with different interests. You can imagine how costly it is buying games for the new generation. They received lawn chairs, barbecue utensils and games, puzzles, beach towels, flip flops, sunglasses (nice ones too), chess, checkers playing cards, you name it! And it was simple because there is sooo much to chose from... they are still putting one puzzle together after a year now. They even received a special edition of some games! This was really a great idea.

Bride's Dowry

Take a small box and decorate in any fashion you choose. You may want to decorate it in a pattern that is consistent with the theme of your shower. Announce to your guests that this is a "dowry box" for the bride. You might want to explain a dowry to the younger guests. Give your guests about 15 minutes to go and find something to put in the dowry to give to the Groom. If your guests have been sitting for a long time this might be a good time to send everyone outside to get needed items to give them a chance to stretch and get some fresh air. You can make suggestions of what they can put in this box. It may be something material such as a handful of dirt. The guest can then announce that they are giving the Groom land. It may be a characteristic of the individual. For example, someone may choose to put a stone in the box and give the Groom the bride's strength or hard headness, or it may be a feeling. Someone may put in something red and give the Groom the bride's love, something yellow and give happiness, etc. For those elderly guests, you may expand where they can look such as in their purse (if walking around might be too difficult). Once the 15 minutes is up, have your guests meet back, and present their gifts and reasons to the dowry to the group. This can be a lot of fun especially if the group is very creative.

"Hand-Crafted Shower Favors"

My sister was wed last July and in addition to planning and throwing her a bridal shower, I wanted to help her with as many details as possible. She and her fiancé were working with a tight budget but are creative people who wanted every aspect of the wedding to be special. I decided to go to Stroke of Genius in San Francisco, which is a paint-your-own-pottery studio. For my sisters shower I picked bright colors and simple designs to hand-paint jewelry boxes and bud vases for inexpensive, easy and totally unique prizes At the shower, we ended up playing extra games because everyone wanted to win one!

"Patio Party"

We were honored with a "couples shower", the theme was Patio Party and each guest brought a gift that we could use in our patio. We received very clever gifts including a ten gallon hat that held a large ceramic dip dish while the brim of the hat held chips, vegetables etc. Other gifts were a portable gas grill, barbecue tools, beverage sets, tablecloths, napkins, and cookbooks. The shower was an outdoor patio party with appropriate foods served.

"Christmas Tree Cocktail"

Decorate the Christmas Tree Cocktail. The invitation is shaped like a tree and perforated to be torn. The torn section of the tree is punched with ribbon as a gift tag for the ornament. This way the couple will remember who gave the gift and the tag can be left on for years to come reminding them of a lovely cocktail honoring the couple.

"Basket Theme"

Romance Basket: lingerie (his & hers), champagne flutes, champagne, scented candles, bath oil, bubble bath, heart-shaped soaps, books of love poems.
Italian Basket: Italian ceramic pasta bowls, wooden spoons, ceramic grated cheese shaker & olive oil cans, oval glass container filled with pasta, cans of tomatoes, red and white checkered place mats & napkins, Italian cookbook.
Decorations Basket: small decorations for every holiday -- scarecrow & little monsters for Halloween, turkeys and pilgrims for Thanksgiving, Christmas decorations, Easter bunnies, Hearts for Valentine's day.
These baskets were my favorites. I also got kitchen and bathroom baskets. It showed how much time people put into their gifts.

Slide Show

I attended my cousin's fiance's bridal shower where her Maid of Honor organized a slide show of the bride - pictures of her with friends and family dating back to when she was a baby. With that she added music to the slide show that made you laugh and even made you cry. It was all together very touching and a beautiful, intimate tribute to the bride.

Gift Certificate Theme

Every guest purchases a gift certificate from the local shops in the bride and Grooms hometown so that they can utilize them throughout their first year of marriage (i.e. grocery store, department stores, specialty shops, restaurants).

"Green, Green, Greenery"

This shower theme revolves around plants. Guests may give items such as real or fake plants, seeds, bulbs, garden tools, gloves and books about gardening. A live green centerpiece could be given to the bride at the end of the shower. The shower could even take place outdoors!

I had a shower for a friend's daughter recently where everyone was mailed a blank recipe card. Their gift was a favorite recipe written on the card along with all non-perishable ingredients for the recipe in a grocery sack or box, basket, etc. Everyone loved it and the pantry was partially stocked.

This was my bridal shower theme. It is very easy to find gifts that qualify for this theme and it can be very fun opening up the gifts! No holds-barred with the type of lingerie...

Party of Firsts

We Need Storage

Many couples make their first home in apartments that simply don't have enough storage. We have had a number of showers for couples that centered on storage solutions for apartments. Kitchen storage can be plastic food containers that will go in the freezer or the refrigerator. Closet storage can be enhanced with wire components or stacking units. Home office storage solutions can include inexpensive portable/rolling file racks or drawer sets that can be hidden away in a closet. Other ideas are things like decorative storage items. This is a great time to personalize an item. I use fabric and other materials to cover boxes that can be used to store writing paper, pens/pencils and stamps, but are able to be placed on a shelf.

Guests purchase gifts that will be ideal for the couple's honeymoon trip. Examples include disposable cameras, toiletries, shaving kit, currency of the country (lire, pesos, francs), etc.

Time of Day
Guests are assigned a time of day and purchase a gift that applies to that time of day. For example, if I picked 10pm, then I would probably choose lingerie since that is bedtime. Or, if I was assigned 8am, I would probably buy a his/her coffee mug set for that early morning wake-up call.

My sister is getting married and the Groom already has an apartment that is fully furnished. What she requested is a Linen Shower. He has dishes, furniture, etc., but he doesn't have cloth napkins, a table cloth, matching bed set, curtains, or other linen items. This idea may be helpful for others in the same situation.
