Default Reception Playlists

I thought it would be fun to compile a play list together You know how people are always asking what songs to tell their DJ they want played for sure.

When you make your list (they do not have to be anywhere near as large as the one I'm creating), put what genre the songs are in, so people who absolutely wouldn't have a hip-hop song at their wedding aren't trying to figure out what you meant by "Back that A** Up" LOL You don't have to be exact.

Include your "must-haves" for any reception too, regardless of genre.

Maybe we can help a bride or two figure out their lists (and their do-not-plays too LOL).
----------------------------------------------------------------------

70s
Mary Jane - Rick James

80s pop (my favorite genre)
Take On Me - Aha
Heaven - Bryan Adams
Forever Young - Alphaville
Rock the Cradle of Love - Billy Idol (do not play if age gap is more than 8 years & you've got a good sense of humor )
Venus - Bananarama
Heartbreaker - Pat Benatar (just because Love is a Battlefield wouldn't fit in)
In a Big Country - Big Country
Livin' On a Prayer - Bon Jovi
Mad About You - Belinda Carlisle
Bette Davis Eyes - Kim Carnes
YouMight Think - Cars
In the Air Tonight - Phil Collins
Jack & Diane - John Cougar Mellancamp
Do You Really Want To Hurt Me - Culture Club
(I Just) Died in Your Arms - Cutting Crew
I'll Always Love You - Taylor Dayne
Somebody - Depeche Mode
Rio - Duran Duran
Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) - Eurythmics (but the dance remix)
She Drives Me Crazy - Fine Young Cannibals
I Ran (So Far Away) - Flock of Seagulls
Relax - Frankie Goes to Hollywood
Always and Forever - Heatwave
Maneater - Daryl Hall & John Oates
I Love Rock-n-Roll - Joan Jett & the Blackhearts
Too Shy - Kajagoogoo
Our House - Madness
Crazy for You - Madonna
Into the Groove - Madonna
La Isla Bonita - Madonna
(I've Had) The Time of My Life - Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes
Safety Dance - Men Without Hats
Leather and Lace - Stevie Nicks and Don Henley
1999 - Prince
Rock This Town - Stray Cats (great lead into the 'swing' genre)
Everybody Wants to Rule the World - Tears for Fears

(there are so many more I could add, but I just went to one website that had a limited selection)

Adult Comtemporary?
Your Love is King - Sade
No Ordinary Love - Sade

Must Haves
White Wedding - Billy Idol
Walk Like an Egyptian - Bangles
Rock the Casbah - Clash
Escape (The Piña Colada Song) - Rupert Holmes
Everybody Have Fun Tonight - Wang Chung
Just the Two of Us - Grover Washington, Jr.

(will add more later)

Mine are mostly country:
Tim McGraw & Faith Hill: It's Your Love
Rascall Flatts: I melt
Rascall Flatts: God Bless the Broken Road
Lonestar: Amazed
Alabama: The Touch

That's all I can think of right now.

If the bride & groom leave the reception early for their honeymoon, Vacation would make a great exit song!

Oooh, ooh, I have lots of songs that I can add. BUT....they're currently in a box somewhere as I'm still trying to get my house back in order from getting new carpet. So I promise that as soon as I find my list I'll add to it. Let me think...I might remember a few.
R&B
My Humps- Black Eyed Peas (because FH hates it but thinks it's funny.)
Yeah- Usher
Get Low- Lil John & the Eastside Boys

Country
Redneck Woman- Gretchen Wilson

That's all I can remember right now...but keep 'em coming!

Our songs that we told our DJ NOT to play or we would kill him were:
  • The Chicken Dance
  • The Macarena
  • The Electric Slide
  • Paradise by the Dashboard Light

A few that we asked him to play:
  • Leather & Lace (Stevie Nicks & Don Henley - Classic rock)
  • Jack & Diane (John Mellencamp)
  • Thank you (Led Zep - our first dance song)
  • For dinner we asked for Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, etc.

Other than that we trusted him. He had about 40 photo albums full of thank you's from Brides and Grooms and he was very laid back and down to earth. We liked him immediately because he "got" us.

Awww, thank you Steph! We got a ton of compliments on the DJ and the food. When I go home to visit friends and family - people are still talking about the food!

Default Music list

Since our DJ is a family friend and "would be groomsmen" if we had more than two people each, we decided to make him a bunch of cds to just put on in random order with a few songs (like first dance and father daughter dance set).

Help me out ladies.... lets start a list of all the favorite get-down-and-boogie songs. i think we'll have plenty of slow songs but if you have some of those to throw in too, awesome.

btw, our first dance is going to be unwritten by natasha bedingfield... very upbeat but i love the line "today is where your book begins, the rest is still unwritten". midway through the song we're going to grab our parents and bp and if all works out, at the end, we'll be in the middle of a big circle of everyone for the final chorus.

so i'll start the list:

1. Love shack- B-52's
2. Brick House- Commodores

If you really love the song, no LOL I went a little overboard I'm pretty... opinionated. By the time I'd finished it wasn't even about the song anymore.

i dont really LOVE the song... theres too many songs that we really love but i like you go away from tradition and didnt want some sappy slow dance... that one just seemed fun and something we can include everyone in on. i couldnt find the post... if it still exists, point the way... interested in your thoughts on it.

im having the bridemaids walk down to watermark by enya... anything wrong with that one?!?! lol

Oh! and you gave me an excellent idea with your post about "cradle of love"... michael is 14 years older than me since i wanted something playing when he enters the ceremony site.................. hehehe

I am positive that my dislike for that song is more than the average person would feel for a song. I doubt your guests would feel as passionately about it. I think that even if I was at a wedding and that was the couple's song I wouldn't be sitting there seething. I'd probably enjoy the moment seeing them dancing together. If that's your first choice, go with it!

We're probably not going to be doing any traditional dancing at our wedding. Just free-dance with everyone and each other. I don't have any suggestions really

we're only doing our dance and father/daughter... my dad HATES YMCA so we're going to have that start and then have the "needle slide off the record" before our song starts which will probably be "brick house" (certainly not your typical butterfly kisses!)

We've got the blended family thing going on. Richy's parents aren't together. His mom and dad would be there with their spouses. My dad passed away and wasn't part of my life anyway, and I had no "like a father" figure in my life. Richy's dad isn't close to me... I think it'd be more painful than fun. On top of all of that, this is his 2nd marriage. We've been together so long it's almost comical that we're not married yet. So we figured we'll just party or something.

that sounds like a good plan... my sister in laws parents didnt show up to their wedding so she used an uncle as her stand in and the dj accidentally played butterfly kisses.

Its good to make your wedding your own though... wont find anything cookie cutter 'round me! and you come up with some of the neatest ideas... i need a creative brain.

Oh, don't mind me.. I already had this list written on my computer incase I decided I wanted to burn the songs and not get a DJ. I live in a tiny village where on a Sat night there are no cars or people on the street after 8pm- I have a LOT of time on my hands!!
