Bird Flu - Again
Spreading to Europe now (Berlin, etc.)
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/birdflu_d...NlYwMlJVRPUCUl
After watching the Oprah episode where she has the top disease control guy on, and reading about it in the news everyday, I'm starting to get freaked. If anyone saw the Oprah episode, the guy said he thinks the Bird Flu is going to have the same results as the Influenza Virus in 1918.
Maybe I won't have to pay off my student loans.

I'm worried about it, but like I said in the other thread... I refuse to live in hiding because of it. I'm staying optimistic that it won't turn out as badly as anticipated.

I'll tell you what, I'm not going to be one of the idiots who waited until the last minute to believe. It's like when there's a hurricane barrelling down toward the state. Most people didn't give a shit, they didn't stock up, they didn't do anything. Then when their power's been knocked out they're the first ones waiting in an 8-hour long line for a single bag of ice and 2 gallons of water, and maybe an MRE if they're lucky, all because they "didn't know it was going to be this bad." But this last hurricane, the lines were MUCH shorter. People are getting the point now. I plan to treat this as I would any other catastrophe. As soon as my instincts say, "It's time," I will be preparing my family for quarantine and any other measures I can take to ensure their survival. Believe me, it'll be long before it's an epidemic.
My advice is to just stay informed. Sure you (general "you") could be right, and it'll be nothing, but you could also be wrong - but you pay with your life, or watching one of your kids or your grandma die instead. *If* it were to become a virus that affects humans in masses, there may be a quarantine. There's no telling how long that would be until it establishes itself as a human virus. If it were to be the absolute worst, it could actually change everything, and I mean rolling our asses back into the depression days once the dust settles. But I have faith that it won't happen like that. I am not playing games though, that's for sure. I'll be keeping an eye on the progression of human cases and base my plan-of-action according to that.

I have no idea what this is. I haven't read one article about it. Now I will of course...
I saw on the news that there may already be a drug to prevent this flu. Anyone else see that?

They can't really say it will until the disease has actually established itself in humans. They're probably off to a good start though.
If you go into the search link up there, and type in bird flu, the other thread with informative links in it, plus some news links, will come up.

Funny you mention that Heather!!! I was talking to the student loan people the other day requesting some forbearance AGAIN and I told the lady that at this rate I will be dead before they see full repayment of my loans. hahahaha.
Then the woman said "Oh, don't say that" and I said "it's ok. It is completely true." hahahahahaha.

Exactly - and bring it home to the U.S. just like 1918.

that it doesn't morph itself into something that can be passed from human to human. At this point, that's all we can do.
Stupid fckin birds.

I can say that at soon as it is contagious through humans, I will definitely prepare for it. Like Crush, I don't plan to adjust my life right now, but it's something I do worry about and will prepare for. I already have mouth and nose covers that I bought for painting but I'll put a couple aside. I got them from 3M and they're the heavy duty type that filter out everything.

I have a couple that I've used for painting, too. Actually, there's one sitting on my desk in front of me as I type this. Bring it on suckas! (OK... not really)
I really hate that I'm bringing such a fragile little person into the world with all this crap going on.

I think I mentioned in another post that we have masks already as well. I refuse to end up assed out because of hoarding and stuff. My mother bought the kind that use filters and stuff.

When SARS went around people used bra cups as masks.

You don't remember the big thing in Asia with bra plants cutting up bras for masks? It was interesting. It was on the news and everything.

It does seem to be gaining momentum.
In addition to face masks, it wouldn't hurt to also stock up on hospital grade antibacterial cleaners, unless you particularly like using a 1:100 bleach solution for cleaning. You know it is hospital grade if it (a) has an EPA number, (b) has the words hospital, and (c) will kill mycobacterium tuberculosis. Keep office doors closed. At least three times a day -when getting to work, before/after leaving for lunch, before leaving-- wipe down the door, door knob, desk top, phone surfaces, and the AC/heating vents. Use one of the cleaning clothes to wipe down your car door handle before getting in. Also stock up on the super-high-grade AC/heating unit filters. And those disposable latex/vinyl gloves to wear when you go out in public (like the grocery store. Train yourself to *never, ever* touch your hands or anything else to your face, mouth, eyes unless you have thoroughly washed them first.
Something we did when I lived in Italy (back when they used "night soil" for fertilizer)... if you buy fruits or vegetables that cannot be peeled or cooked prior to eating (like lettuce), mix a 1:100 bleach to water solution, swish the fruits/veggies for 3-5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
If this starts being seen in the US, then I think one of the first things will be quarentining the area, including restricting air/bus/rail travel; massive disinfection of vehicles/planes/trains allowed to leave the contaminated areas; use of face masks in public areas.

That's good information Wynelle. Now that Mike and I are in a house, I plan to prepare for just about anything. Where we live now makes it almost impossible to stock up on extra food, bottled water, etc - we just don't have room for it. Now that we have a huge garage and storage in the basement away from the rec room & guest room, I can start stocking up on stuff. Not just for the bird flu, but for anything really. It sure isn't the same world it was when I was a kid! All we had to know how to do was hide under a desk!

This really is gaining momentum in the bird world. There are only 91 deaths worldwide since 2003, so those are good people-odds. But the more birds that get it the more chance humans have of contracting a strain of it. India is running tests on people after having like 50,000 birds die of it. And so far, no humans have it there. That's a positive thing. They seem to be taking this really seriously over there in Asia/Africa.
