Flowergirls' Dresses
I had a little discussion with my FMIL tonight. The jist of which was that she really doesn't approve of having the little ones in black
I was going to have them in silvery-grey at first but I could only find a couple of fabrics that colour and when I put the samples of those next to my dress they looked dirty
My mum is making the FGs dresses... This is the pattern I chose...
I was going to have the front hem raised to show a little bit of their crinkly black underskirt and have the lacing at the back black ribbon, but like I said I couldn't find the right fabric so we bought a beautiful black satin instead.
Moreno was happy with this (he'd like eveyone to wear black ) and although I was a bit worried about how well it'd go down with the girls parents and both our mums I still thought the girls would look lovely!
Well his mum isn't insisting on the change but she really isn't happy about it
What she kept suggesting was having the girls main colour as ivory or off white like my dress but still keeping the black details. I didn't want anyone else to be in ivory because I think the bride stands out better in the photos if she's the only one in ivory but I don't want his mum disapointed either... I told her I'd go into Glasgow and take the sample of my dress fabric and see what I could find but if I couldn't get what I wanted then they'd be in black... The thing is that they're her grandchildren, I'm not actually related to them. Plus she has given us a stack of money to put towards the wedding and hasn't asked for one single thing except that the little ones aren't in black...
I'm going to feel like the biggest bitch if I don't change the colour!
So has anyone any other suggestions??? Is there some other option that I just haven't seen yet? Do you think there are any other colour possibilities that wouldn't suddenly change my scheme?
The MOH is in a black dress, all the guys will be in all black kilts... My mum *thinks* she is going to be in black, my FMIL will probably be in blue or purple (or something in between those two...) I'm in ivory... The jewellery is silver... The flowers are creams and greens... This is roughly what the flowers will be like...
The only other options I have come up with are finding a lilac-silver-grey fabric. Or a very soft spring green... What do you think? Any ideas?

I think the black will be beautiful on the FGs. My personal taste of having ivory dresses with black details just doesn't work for me. It makes me think of burlesque-ish outfits.
I would stick with your color choice. A compromise would be to maybe have the FGs carry a bouquet of ivory colored flowers?
If you and Moreno really have your heart set on this color scheme, stick to your guns girlfriend.

Since it's two pieces.. you could maybe have a black skirt with offwhite top and black trim... the little ones wouldn't be in all black but would have contrast to you. You could also raise the hem and show a bit of off white tulle. Just an idea...
I also like the idea of a soft green.
But like everyone tells me when I freak out about my FMIL's wishes, it's your wedding do what YOU want.

I love that FG dress that was just like my first pick for my BM's. I don't really know what to tell u I know u don't want to hurt your FMIL but not doing something she ask. But Moreno and your self has the final choice. Stay strong and pick what u think is right.

What about looking at a brocade or flocked material. In silver with black threading or flocking???

I think that harkens back to the "old days" Ann. It was only considered proper for widows to wear black. I remember my Gran giving me a hard time when I went to visit. I was 16 or 17 and she said young women should NOT wear black!
I really like the compromise of black skirt and ivory or green top. You still get to keep the theme colours and make a compromise to please your FMIL.

Since you and Mo both want the girls in black, I say go for it. Could you possibly add ivory details? I see that the dress has a lace up back, maybe that could be ivory, as could the underskirt or sash. That way, it's still black, but FMIL might not find it as troublesome. I think black with white/ivory detail is really elegant and not at all morbid or inappropriate in any way. Here's a pic:
It's not at all funereal. Just sophisticated.

I've been trying to hunt down some pics online of FGs in black to show her!
I've found a few but they all seem to have other colours...
This first one kind of shows what Kenzies Mama was talking about! I think I could live with ivory in place of the grey in this pic... still with th black detailing...

I don't think any of those little girls look morbid!
This is the dress that gave me the inspiration for the black underskirt...

I like it too! But, is it strapless? That might be a bit much for a little girl. Very cute though!!

No Suzy, it'd be made with the McCalls pattern (the first post in this thread), I don't think his mum would approve of strappless any more than she'd approve of black! That picture does look strapless now I've shrunk it, but on the web site you can see it has tiny little thin straps...

Did she say why she doesn't want black? I think the two tone would be pretty, but does she not want black at all? I guess I don't see the difference between black or black/ivory?

Did you show Mo's mum the pictures of the little girls? Maybe that would help convince her that "other little girls" DO wear black in weddings and it's OK. No one's dead. No one thinks they look like little hookers or vampires or anything!

I've not let her see the pics yet (my printer and I are waging war at the moment )...
I doubt I'll manage to change her mind on this, she tends to be as stubborn as Moreno is It's not that she'd really create a big issue over it, but she wouldn't be very happy...
I'm thinking I could compromise, it wouldn't kill me... The girls would still look lovely...
Ladedah: She knows that I'm not giving up on the black entirely, I explained it hadn't been my first choice to have the girls in all black but I couldn't find a grey that I liked. She suggested ivory but I told her I wanted it to be just for me! So she suggested having mainly ivory with little touches of black to tie it into my dress (ivory) and my MOH's dress (black) the girls wouldn't look like mini-mes but they'd still match well...
I guess my best plan of action would be seeing if I can get my printer to work, showing her all these happy, healthy looking kids in black and seeing her reaction. If she still hates the idea then I'll have them in ivory tops with the black lacing and black skirts. I actually like that steely grey from the first of those group pics, hadn't considered one as dark as that... Maybe I'll go to Glasgow tomorrow and see what I can find...
Thanks for all the input everyone

Thank you!
I liked that arangement because it wasn't too structured, I don't like it when they look like a really stiff ball of flowers. The one I've chosen has a couple of changes from that ones, but they're the same idea. And my MOH will have the same idea but probably without the bear grass, and I'm thinking of a sort of ball of flowers on a ribbon with the same colours for the girls, that way they'll have their hands free to help me fix my cloak! But they won't be set in stone till two weeks before the wedding when the final order goes through...
