Do you have to have a bouquet toss at your reception? I realize you don't "have" to do anything, but how bad is it if I don't? What are some other suggestions? The flowers I selected are hard to find and I don't have enough to make a separate "toss" bouquet, and I'd really hate to give away my bouquet, as it will be a keepsake. Could I make a toss bouquet with flowers different from the ones that are in my bouquet? Suggestions and opinions would be appreciated.

I plan on making an extra bouquet with silk flowers to toss. The bouquet you toss doesn't have to be just like your actual bouquet. Or just don't toss at all, I wouldn't think it would matter.

I made a small toss bouquet with silk flowers.
You don't HAVE to even do a toss, though you might want to replace it with something. You could have an anniversary dance instead, especially if you're not having a garter toss. With an anniversary dance, the DJ invites all married couples to the dance floor. After a minute or so, he tells the couples who have been married for five years to stay on the dance floor. Then he makes an announcement for 10 years, 15, 20, etc. The last couple remaining on the dance floor is the couple who's been married the longest, and you can present them with the "toss" bouquet or with some other sort of wedding momento.

We didn't do the garter/bouquet toss, or have a wedding cake.
Instead of the toss, we had a dance where all married couples got on the dance floor, and the DJ would say: "All couples married less than 5 years, please sit down." Then 10 yrs, 15 yrs, etc...

The anniversary dance is very popular at weddings since many brides either don't have a lot of single friends or they just aren't into it. In my area, the florists give the bride a complimentary toss bouquet. If yours doesn't, then make a simple one with silk flowers or purchase a few fresh flowers at the grocery store and tie them with a pretty ribbon. It is the thought more than the size of the bouquet that is important.

I think the flower toss is fun, but I have to wonder do you HAVE to do the garter toss? I think that's kind of weird, personally, I would be uncomfortable, and then more uncomfortable for the 2 people that do the garter dance thingy.
Back to your question, I think the toss flowers can be anything you choose, you could do white roses or silk flowers, one of my friends did the MOH's bouquet.

I will skip making those who catch the garter and bouquet do the traditional "guy puts garter on girl" thing, but I think I will try to make up a "toss" bouquet. Or, I may pick up a fresh flower arrangement to throw. I've only got a little over a week to go, so I don't have time to do much!

It must be a regional thing. I've NEVER been to a wedding with a garter toss where the man who catches it puts it on the leg of the woman who catches the bouquet.
Every wedding I've been to has had a garter toss. In EVERY case, the man who caught it would just put it on their upper arm. The man who catches the garter and the woman who catches the bouquet would simply take a picture with the bride and groom.
I would NEVER have had a garter toss if the expectation was that the man would put the garter on the woman's leg. That's kind of weird, IMO. This would have been especially gross at my wedding, because my brother caught the garter and one of my sisters caught the bouquet.

I made a seprate toss bouquet - just a simpler verson of what I carried.
Also, I rent to a wedding once where six people in attendance were engaged to be married within a year, so the bride divided her bouquet among them.
Is there someone you'd prefer to honor by presenting them the bouquet (i.e. a couple about to celebrate their golden anniversary)? That would be a nice alternative.
Oh - and I did have the garter toss, but no way was I having whoever caught it put it on whoever got the bouquet. Good thing - the garter was caught by our 6-year-old ring bearer (the only one who even TRIED), who tore it to shreds within minutes. I did get a picture of them though.

Feb-bride, I have been to one wedding, many years ago, where they did the guy who caught the garter puts it on the leg of the woman who caught the bouquet, and it was very weird. They didn't even know each other, and here they HAD to do this in front of over 100 people. They were very uncomfortable about it. Never saw it since!

I am not a fan of that tradition, whereever it's from. I haven't seen it done in the south, but I hear it's popular in other areas. I always think of that episode of Am. Funniest Videos when the girlfriend of the garter catcher goes over there and starts beating on him for having too much fun putting it on the bouquet catcher's leg. LOL... I would not want that to happen! And, I agree with everyone, it's a weird tradition.

I'm in Northern California. Like I said, it's NEVER been done at any wedding I've ever attended, and I've been to a lot of weddings.

I will be doing a breakaway bouquet at my wedding, not sure if I will be using fresh or silk flowers. Several small bunches of flowers are all handtied with ribbons, and you hold them together, but when you toss it, it breaks into several small bunches of flowers instead of one bouquet. This is best to do when nobody knows you are doing it, it's hilarious to see the girls scramble for the flowers as they separate! Some folks attach an extra ribbon to each bunch with a 'fortune' written on it. I am not sure if I am going to do that part yet!

LOL... I'm picturing these girls running in all directions trying to scoop SOMETHING up! I've never heard of a "breakaway" bouquet, but I guess that's better than 6 girls fighting over one bouquet. Sounds interesting!

Oh believe me - I will have my video camera ready - I'm gonna win that $10K from America's Funniest Home Videos for sure!

The only thing better than a chick fight over 1 bouquet is 6 chick fights over 6 bouquets! KIDDING! I'm kidding. It is always fun to watch though, and a nice surprise for the guests.

The break-away bouquet is a Martha Stewart thing and was quite popular about 3 or 4 years ago. It is actually quite fun to watch the surprised looks as the bouquet separates into 5 or 6 small ones. The ladies love it.
