Default Clanking of glasses for the Bride & Groom to kiss

This is a thread that was started in our old BlissWeddings.com forums by autumnj3 on 10/01/05.

I cannot stand everyone clanking on the glasses to get the bride and groom to kiss. I think it is just so tacky. Anyone have any suggestions that would be fun and not too easy? (I am not a big public person so I want them to work for it). Thanks

Oriental trading has little bells that come attached to cards that say "Ring for a kiss." They are cute if you don't mind hearing ringing all night. I think the website is orientaltrading.com

Lots of people have individuals or tables stand up and recite a poem or sing part of a song with the word "love" in it.

my sister-in-law had people demonstrate the kind of kiss they wanted to see.

Star Jones has silver bells with her initials engraved on them at EACH place setting for people to ring. While it is really sweet to have newly-weds kiss, it becomes tiring when someone is always clanking on the crystal or ringing the bell. And if it is overdone, it hurts, not helps, the flow of the evening affairs...

And I heard that Star was a REAL bridezilla!!

If you reception venue allows this, how about having people blow bubbes instead?

If you really don't like the kissing part, then ignore the clanking. After a couple of times, guests quit doing it. I rarely see the kissing occurring at weddings any more.

My daughters wedding, it was the show them how to kiss. As soon as they sat down the clinking started, the MC announced they wouldn't respond to clinking and that they had to be shown how to kiss. Then he told the guests that who ever clinked the glasses would be reprimanded by the ushers. He then handed all the ushers water pistols! The show them how to kiss was a blast. Some guests were very creative. And lots of the guests still clinked the glasses and yes, they got squirted. The water pistols were small and luckily the ushers kept everything under control. No one got carried away. The whole thing was a lot of fun!

Hehe the water pistols. That sounds like our sense of humor!! I love that idea.

Don't waste your money on the bells from oriental trading company. I used them and you couldn't hear them, so people ended up clanking their glasses anyway.

We had my bother (the MC) annouce that clinking wasn't allowed. No one clinked. Instead, if someone wanted us to kiss, they had to come up front and tell a story about my husband and I.

My original plan was a cross word puzzle. Everyone was to get copies at their table, and then when they had an answer, they announced it - if it was correct, DH & I kissed. If it was incorrect, we picked who they kissed! The only problem was that I forgot the crosswords are my parents place when my mom left to go to the site!!! OOPS! We figured out the story idea right away (credit my Bro for that!)

I like the water pistols idea, and I like the idea about the crosswords! I'll have to keep those two in mind.

I think the water pistol idea is funny, but if some of my guests were squirted with water they would have been pretty upset!

The only ones squirted were the ones clinking the glasses. And, when one person clinks, the whole table joins in! They all knew what to expect! It's not like they were ambushed! The ushers very calmly would walk over to the table, aim and squirt! Only those at the table got a squirt. At one point, two tables in particular got really into it and would clink and blame the other, so after a couple times of that, if either table clinked, then both tables got it!! It was really a scream! Very entertaining!

lol, that does sound hysterical. I'm just thinking of my prim & proper Aunt and Uncle. They would have been horrified, lol.

Just make sure they don't use them on the dance floor or anywhere else that isn't carpeted. The ushers kept it strictly to the table area which was totally carpeted. And again, they didn't get carried away with the squirting. A good part of the fun part was watching them get up and head toward the "quilty" table. They looked like gangsters with their vests on, but holding little pink, yellow, green and blue guns! It was a hoot! The wedding was almost 2 months ago and people still get a chuckle out of it whenever it's brought up in conversation.
