Engagement Rings Still Common?
I am starting to check out rings and ran across something that I wasn't sure of.
Are engagement rings still common? I can remember back when my sister was married the engagement ring was actually part of the real ring when the two were put togethor.
Any help would be appreciated!

I have never met someone who didn't have an engagement ring, so yeah they're definitely still extremely common.
They usually fit with the wedding ring after the ceremony, but all the married/engaged women I know have an engagement ring.

It sounds like your sister's ring was part of a set. When it's in a set then it becomes the "total ring" after you put the band with it.
However, you can also get a solitaire or other ring and just find a band to go with it - you don't have to buy a set.
But yes, they are still very common.

The only person I know who doesn't have two rings is my mother--my father gave her a ring when he proposed and they used the same ring (not a traditional solitaire) as the wedding ring. So yeah, still common.

Thanks all. So do you usually buy the engagement ring along with the actual wedding ring? Just want to make sure because they really need to fit or interlock with each other. I don't want to spend the money and not have them work!

Richard bought mine, and we're going back to the man who made it for me in the next couple weeks. However, mine is custom designed, and therefore that makes a difference. If you're just going to a jewellery store, you may want to buy a set to make sure it interlocks, if that's important to you. I plan to wear both of my rings at all times, so it is important that they fit together. If you only plan to wear your wedding ring, it's not as much of a big deal.

If you want something that isn't just a smooth circle (like, has a V in the band, or isn't an even width, or has large stones that aren't raised much above the band) you'll want to consider a set or make sure you bring your e-ring and try it on with the wedding bands you're considering. If your wedding band will have large stones, you do want to make sure they fit well with the stone or stones on your e-ring.
If your plan is to let FH pick out the e-ring on his own, you definitely need to let him know about these requirements, so that he can let the salespeople know, so that they can help him choose something that will give you the most flexibility in choosing a wedding ring that will work with your e-ring. Otherwise, go shopping together, and look at both e-rings and wedding rings to get a sense of how they work together and whether you want a set or not. Actually, it can be very helpful to go shopping together anyway, even if you want him to do the final choosing, so that he knows what you like.
