Default The Economy and Wedding Planning

Seeing as the economy seems to be impacting almost everything these days, I've been thinking about how it's effecting wedding planning.

I'm curious to know if people are experiencing increased stress with your fiance or family members on the issue of money and wedding budget.

Are people having to make modificiations to their "ideal" wedding? If premarital counseling by a therapist was a possibility - is that something that is being knocked down or off the "to do" list?

If you're having to make sacrifices, what are they? How are you doing with it all?

So far the economy hasn't affected us. Luckily both of us are in steady jobs, so it hasn't been bad. We aren't planning on doing formal premarital counselling anyway, but that would certainly be the first thing to go if we were and money was becoming an issue.

Our wedding isn't for a year and a half though, so that probably makes a difference as well. If it were coming up quickly then I'm sure we would be feeling the crunch a lot more.

Consider yourselves lucky! It must be nice not to have to worry about that piece. I suspect there are more than a few others who are.

Ciarrai - is Canada in the middle of a crazy recession like we are?

I think if Mike and I were planning our wedding now as opposed to five years ago, we would either hold off or drastically change a few things... We both have good, steady jobs but like everyone we know, we're planning for anything because you just don't know what's going to happen in the next six months to a year. We've only seen the tip of the iceburg for the mortgage crisis and layoffs.

If I was planning a wedding right now, it would have to be even more low key than our wedding already was. We didn't go overboard because it was a second wedding for the two of us and we had other financial obligations (4 children - need I say more?) but, we definitely wouldn't go into debt for the sake of a wedding. The wedding would have to fall within our budget - not matter what that might be.

Heather - Yes, Canada is affected as well; especially the manufacturing sector (which is why I was laid off from the day job). We don't have the banking mess that you do though.

It totally depends on the area. BC (and Vancouver especially) hasn't been affected at all yet. It's expected to get a bit worse, but nowhere near as bad as the U.S., hence why it hasn't affected our wedding plans.

If we were getting married now, our wedding would be NOTHING like it was. My father paid for it, but he owns his own commercial construction company and business is so iffy at the moment. I would absolutely have eloped so that he kept his money. It's a really scary time for him right now, it reminds me of how things were in the early - mid 90's.

My husband and I are very lucky that his job is recession proof and that he has been on as long as he has, so even if layoffs come in the future, he has a lot of people under him who would go.
