Default Do Not Play list

What songs were on your do not play list? I've tentatively started thinking about them (because we're thinking of using an iPod instead of a DJ, so I'm trying to compile songs), but I want to see what you other ladies have included on yours?

Right now I have:
Country
Rap
Nine Inch Nails (bad bad bad experience with the DJ my cousin used playing Closer right after dinner when children and elderly family members were still in attendence.)
Paradise By The Dashboard Light

Our Do Not Play list was:

Freebird (DJ said he had people request the extended version at weddings)
Macarena
YMCA
Chicken Dance
Electric Slide
Anything hokey or kitchy

I heard "Get Low" at a friend of mine's wedding and I about died. It was pretty soon after dinner and you could see the older guests trying to decipher the words..."the sweat drips off where, dear?"

My brother's band (they're pretty popular in this area...I got em free for my wedding) gets requests sometimes for "Pu@@y Control" by Prince at weddings. He absolutely refuses to play it unless it's very late and the bride insists...and even then he feels weird about it.

So I guess I would just say pretty much anything with words you don't want your grandmother hearing, regardless of genre!

We had an EXTENSIVE do not play list. It was a 3-page excel file. I don't know if I still have it, but I can look and email it to you if I do.

Basically, we went online and copied a bunch of playlists, and then split them into the "please play," "do not play" and "eh" categories. We did it that way b/c we didn't want to exclude any ONE category (like Rap or R&B) b/c we do like some songs in those categories. But we also dislike some songs (or at least didnt' want them played) in our favorite categories (Classic Rock & Country).

Our DJ was a little overwhelmed, but he did a REALLY good job!

I did not have a "do not play" list because I just didn't feel it was necessary. Our DJ (one of my husband's friends) was not so young that he would think that it was okay to play songs with explicit lyrics, and I didn't care if they played YMCA, the Chicken Dance, etc., because we had a lot of kids at our wedding who would enjoy that sort of stuff.

What I did have was a list of songs that I definitely DID want played.

That cha-cha song.... "slide to the left, slide to the right" etc etc. I hate that song!

But it's less annoying than the electric slide and always gets everyone on the floor here. Besides, what's funnier than seeing your grandmother doing the "hands on your knees" part? (Ok, it may just be me - my family is just goofy and we find it amusing.)

The only song I can think of at the moment that totally makes me grind my teeth is the macarana. Ugh.

I had a band and cds to play on their breaks so I had a pretty wild mix. Haha. I'll have to think and get back to you.

As a guest, the annoying songs I hear at weddings are:

- The Macarena!
- The cha cha song
- I will survive (its a wedding = happy occassion) why play sad songs just cuz its a catchy beat?
- I will always love you by Whitney Houston, again sad song for happy occassion
- Trance music (just sounds too clubbish, unless its the type that has a good balance of words and music)

Me too, nothing with excessive cussing or sexual content. I'm keeping THAT play list for the bachlorette party.

I realize you said you were using an ipod for you're music because of this bad experience .... but not all wedding dj's are that dense. We had an excellent experience so unless you have another reason for not wanting a dj ... think about giving them another try. I think it's a little better than just pre-recorded music. It then becomes entertainment (at least if you go with the right one).
Anyhow ... there's my rant.
On my do not play list was Elton John. Although I do love his music ... it's had it's time at weddings & it's time we move on.
Congrats & all the best for your future.
Being married is amazing !!

I don't believe Ciarrai ever said the NIN experience was the reason that she was thinking of going with an iPod, just that it is why NIN is on her DNP list. Obviously, there are good DJs out there, but there are many pros and cons to consider when determining live band vs DJ vs iPod.

Nov is right. We haven't completely decided on whether or not we're going to use a DJ. It's going to come down to price at this point.
