jaw dropping Hair Trauma (Vent)

I just made a HUGE mistake. I've been dying my hair red (natural color dark brown) using kits from drugstores. Lately, I've been unhappy with the resulta - I still looked like a brunette, unless I was under a bright light, so tonight, I did a double process (first stripping my hair of any color, then dying to what I want). It was supposed to be a warm sunset-y color (the name is "Copper Fury"), and it came out orange! Not good - especially since my eyebrows are still dark, so the whole thing looks fake! My only option now is to get a shade that's more red then orange and cover this mess. I know I'm murdering my hair this way, but I don't know what else to do. Oh - and the picture you see here in my avitar is my headshot, so I can't stray from that too much.

Anyway, I'm not really looking for advice - I just need to vent about this. Oh - and all DH said was "It's lighter... you wanted it lighter." Gee. thanks!

Aren't men great when it come to that stuff?

If I were you, I'd go to a salon and have it professionally fixed this time. They'll know the best way to match your head shot hair color... it just may cost an arm and a leg.

Guys just don't get it!

I'm sorry Maggie! I hope the second color turns out ok. Just give your hair a deep conditioning treatment afterward and be really good to it for awhile. for you.

oh Maggie, that really sucks! I have to agree and say that you should go to a salon to get it fixed. It's better to go there and spend money than turn your hair an even worse colour by trying to fix it yourself (I've seen it happen).

I'm in agreement with the ladies! Go to a salon. You don't want to damage your hair any further by putting a 3rd treatment on yourself.

Be prepared for the inevitable lecture!

Unfortunately, I can't afford to do this at a salon. Since I'm trying ti get a darker shade, I'm sure this should work. Actually, I'm kinda getting used to it now.

I've done that, too! Just dye it darker yourself and condition it like crazy. Unless your hair is very brittle or damaged to begin with, I'm sure it will be fine. Mine was ok in the end.

The only thing I would add (and feel free to ignore coz I know you weren't looking for advice ) is watch when you re-dye it that you haven't got a green toned brown. Make sure the base is still a red shade and you should be fine. Any shade of darker auburn *should* do the job

Ann that is what I used to change my hair from an orange color to red. I loved being a red head, but fh likes my really dark brown.

You should take before and after pictures if you do re-dye.

As most of the girls have said, the salon is best but I agree with CW. As long as your hair wasn't stressed before you started, you'll be fine to re-dye and condition, condition, condition. It's worked for me when I got an orange head as well.

Good luck!

LOL, so how many wanna-be redheads are there on this forum?

Have we ALL dyed our hair a funny orange during our quest for a real red?

CW-I think so. My former roomie and I both dyed our hair red all the time. Mine was the only one that turned orange. Oh well, it is close to being a black color now and I haven't dyed it in 9 months.

Oh, CW just reminded me of the "sun in" incident of my youth. I don't think they even MAKE this stuff anymore. It was SUPPOSED to make your hair get "natural blonde" highlights in the sun, bit it just made everyone's hair orange (unless, I guess, you already HAD naturally blonde hair). DO NOT get a color with "ash" in the name to color over it. I remember my mom picked out this "ash brown" color to go over it and it made my hair GREEN!

Now the bottom half of my hair is a slight reddish color and the top half is my natural brown. I was going to pick up a box of the reddish to make it all one color and FH looked sad. He said I should go natural for awhile. I told him that was fine but it wouldn't all be natural by the time the wedding comes so I'll either have to dye it the reddish or find a color close to natural to dye it all that color. He didn't even notice that it was two colors. It was sweet. I guess I'll go natural for awhile, and then I can go back to red later.

I tried blonde highlights before but it didn't go well. I looked funny and for awhile it just looked like I was going grey. I don't think I'll do that one again.

Jen, my mom loves and hoarded a bunch of that stuff.
I think we still have a few bottles! Once, when I was about 12, I used it to try and lighten my arm hair -- it, too, turned a funny orangish color. I don't know what I was thinking of, since they make kits for bleaching body hair. I guess I was a pretty impulsive little thing.

I learned to look at "base colors." Turns out, the one I originally had had an orange/gold base. This time, I looked for a red base. Not red/orange, not red/brown, not red/violet - just red. I ended up with Miss Clairol's "Flame." Now the color's a little better, but I wonder if I should have gotten "Ruby Red" instead. Oh - in addition to regular conditioning, I use a leave-in conditioner every time I wash my hair.

My biggest disaster (worse than my blonde phase) - I was in a play where my character was of another race, so I dyed my hair black (I know I could've used a temporary color, but none of them were working). I did it a week before opening, and the play had a three-week run, so by the time we were done, I had a month's worth of roots coming in. I washed my hair with Head & Shoulders a zillion times to make some of the black go away, then re-dyed it the usual red. Result: still black with orange roots! I hightailed it to my hairdresser, braced myself for her lecture and had her fix it (I usually go the DYI route, but this was over my head - excuse the pun!)

I've had so many "bottle" hair colors that for a long time, I couldn't remember what my "real" color was supposed to be. Now, I only get it professionally highlighted with two shades of blonde.

I remember a nightmare hair coloring that I had. I went to a "professional" (not the lady I go to now). She was my husband's haircutter, so I thought I'd give her a try. I told her I wanted red HIGHLIGHTS (I'm a brunette). She dyed my entire head red, and when I say "red," I'm talking Wynonna Judd red. It SO did not look good on me!

DH and I both went with red streaks for the wedding. I was light blonde with red and he was jet black with red. It turned out great for both of us...however....

Mine has faded to a blah looking brown and his is oranagey looking. So I am going to the salon tomorrow to add dark brown low lights for a more drastic effect. I'm HUGE on drastic effects in hair color...no subtleness for me! LOL I'm sure I will shock my chemicalist (hair color lady) b/c 3 weeks ago I had long hair and this past Sunday I chopped it off (first time since 1987 that I have had short hair). She hasnever seen my hair short and will probably be in disbelief. Hopefully I got rid of most of the damaged parts and it is healthy enough to color this soon.

Default Sebastian Colourshines

I HIGHLY recommend Sebastian Colourshines for damaged hair (or really for any hair!) It will color your hair for 4-6 weeks without damaging it AT ALL, and it actually makes it a lot healthier and shinier. I haven't colored my hair with permanent color since June or July of 2004, I only use this product for coloring my hair now. I initially started using it because I got TR, and I fell in love with it and still use it even though most of my TR has been cut off. It will not lighten your base at all, so if you want to go lighter, this will not work for you. But if you want to deepen or enhance your color, or add subtle highlights this is totally the way to go. If you do use permanent color, you can use a clear Colourshine over it to seal your color in and it will last significantly longer. It works great for evening out your color when you have gotten a bit oversaturated on the ends as happens a lot when you do your own at home coloring. I buy mine here: http://estore.heavenspa.com/Category...y=Colourshines

Ok, Jennifer. You brought up an interesting observation that I've heard. That women chop off their hair as soon as they get married. We were on a cruise where a girl ON HER HONEYMOON chopped it all off. Several other ladies I know have done that. You did right after your wedding, too. Anyone have any theories or observations on that trend? I've heard people say it's because men tend to like longer hair so before their man is "hooked" women keep it long for them, but as soon as they're married they can do what they want because the focus is off of "impressing" their mate physically (at least on some level). Or, sometimes people say it's more of the "housewife" or "professional woman" look, so if you're married, you better LOOK married. Also, a lot of women upon ENDING a relationship end up doing something drastic with their hair, sort of as an: "Oh, yeah! Look at me, I'm independent and I don't need you!" Is the suddenly married woman cutting off hair some sort of subconscious level also asserting her independence--I MAY be married, but I still have power over my look. OR, another idea may be just because women feel like they need to grow their hair for some wedding up-do that as soon as they have the opportunity, they're getting it cut. LOL! For the record my hair is currently shoulder length (blonde). As you can see in my signature, I've had it chin-length and I wasn't married at the time--but I WAS going for "a professional mom who may be nerdy but still has a bit of pizzaz" look with my short *fake* red hair.
