Default Flying with a wedding dress

Im not sure if this is where I should post this but I was wondering what I need to know about flying with a wedding dress?? How am I suppose to go about doing this I am lost. Has anyone had any experience with this? I guess I need to call the airline to find out their guidelines but I was wondering if anyone knew anyone who had problems or positive experiences with this?

My FH works for Spirit Airlines and I asked him about it. The only thing that he could come up with is that you could either carry it on and ask the flight attendants to hang it up in their quarters or you can check it as fragile luggage. He said it is a $49 fee for that, but to make sure that the thing is packaged tighter than Fort Knox.

Would you consider shipping it to your destination? It seems like it might be hard to take it on an airplane with you.

My DH's sister carried her dress onto the plane in a carry-on sized piece on luggage. Then the day before the wedding she just steamed out any wrinkles.

I suggest using UPS or Fedex with insurance and tracking for any thing you can't carry on. Didn't we have a bride not to long ago that lost her bags?

Im not sure if I will be able to ship it out because I am only going to be just getting the dress right before we leave and I have heard bad stories about this as well as people losing their luggage with their dress. I was hoping to take it on as a carry one but didnt know if I needed to contact the airlines beforehand, I have been told that I need to.

You wont have to ask them anything if you pack it into a regular size carry on and you dont bring another carry on. I wouldn't trust not carrying it on.

I would definitely carry it on with you...you don't want to risk losing it! Then press it to get the wrinkles out when you get there!

Carry it on, then as soon as you get to where ever you are staying, hang it in a closet and unzip it so it can get air. Depending on how much time you have before your arriving flight and the wedding you can get it professionally steamed.

Default I say carry it on!

My little cousin sent the MOH dresses from Canada to Australia by Fedex and she had the package tracking number and all that jazz BUT....Even though she had the tracking number she couldn't get the package expedited from customs....

She got the dresses there only a week before the wedding when she was planning on getting them there three weeks prior. One of the MOH could not meet with them early on that week therefore did not get to have the dress taken in. Thank goodness there was very little to take in.

I for one will definitely carry it on no matter what the airline has to say or I will make them personally responsible for getting it there before I do

I am told that they do take it at the front of the plane when you board to hang in the front locker.
