Thanks for your inquiry.
If your DJ is experienced he should know a lot of crowd pleasing, mainstream "crossover" music. Crossover means music that appeals to all generations, older and younger, so that everybody feels welcome to dance. Songs like "Brown Eyed Girl" work so well at practically any party because guests of all ages, from 18 to 80, know and respond to them.
It's usually a good idea to start the dancing with (mainstream) music everyone can relate to. Your DJ can get more progressive as the reception unfolds if that is what your group is into.
We always supply our wedding clients with a "Hit List" of popular music to help them get started choosing. Ask your DJ if he has such a list or do a search for one online.
Variety is key. Just like a good meal includes a variety of foods, most receptions includes many styles of music. From Sinatra to Santana, Disco to Oldies, Slow Songs to Guilty Pleasures- a mix that includes many styles keeps your party sounding fresh and exciting.
And let your DJ know what you don't want. If cliched, cheesy and played out songs are not your thing, make sure he knows. For some groups, a song like "Celebration" may be a huge hit. But to a lot of people, this represents the kind of music they want to avoid at their wedding. Let the DJ know where you stand on the "cheese" scale.
