Need Your Input, Oh Wise Ones!
My FH, Christopher, is coming to visit Feb 12-20 and we are going to get hitched here in Toronto and then have the big to-do when I move to Missouri.
I found out today that in order to get the marriage licence I must present his passport- a photocopy is unacceptable.
So we have 2 choices:
1) I get him to send his passport to me by courier, I get the licence and send it back to him and try to arrange for the Valentine's Day date which he is really keen on.
OR
2) We wait and get the licence when he gets here but go ahead and book the wedding for the Friday instead of V day to ensure that we actually have a set date.
I'm leaning towards the latter so that we don't lose his passport somehow, knowing our luck lately it could very well happen! And it may be easier for my friends in case they have Valentine's evening plans.
Thoughts? Opinions?

I would get the license when your FH gets there and get married on Friday. That way you KNOW things will happen the way you want them to... no surprises.

Why can't you get the license when he arrives, but book V-day in advance? Is there a waiting period that would prevent that?

Yeah, the whole passport handoff sounds a little scary to me. While it would be really romantic, you might not be able to BOOK Valentine's Day anyway--I would think it would be the wedding day of the year. The only thing I could think is there ANY way he could come out earlier just to get all the necessary paperwork done? Did you talk to the town and find out what you need to do or what the waiting period is, etc?

I vote for Valentines day.
Mainly b/c that's what he wants- and if it's possible, go for it!

PC,
First I want to let you know that I got a huge smile on my face when I read that he wanted to get married on Valentine's Day. That is so sweet . Second I agree with you that it would be safer to wait so nothing would happen to his passport.

Everyone seems to have this covered, but can I vote for getting the licence together.
Will you be having any get together on your legal wedding day? Just asking coz if you are V. day could work out really expensive. I know over here the hike up the cost of flowers and meal and all sorts on Valentines Day. One red rose would normally cost about £2 but can easily cost £10

I'm calling the place tomorrow that does the ceremonies to see if they are available on V day- otherwise the point is moot!
No "shin dig" Ann- most, if not everyone who'll be there this time ( which is like 4 people!) will be coming to Missouri. We're just going to have drinks at the pub across the street. I am assuming everyone will have plans for the evening and won't want to hang out.
OMG- I'm talking about getting married in 3 WEEKS!!!! AHHHHHHHH

Have you checked to find out if you could get the marriage license if only you appear? In most U.S. states the couple must appear together to get the license. If there is no waiting period to use the license, then Valentine's Day sounds like a great idea.

I told Chris what you said and he replied "Aw shucks, you're making me blush"!!
He really is the most romantic person I have ever met! I hope that never changes!
Thanks to all your sharp questions...We can get the marriage licence on the Monday after he arrives- takes about an hour! I called the chapel and they do have Feb 14...only it is at 9 or 9:30 A.M.!!!! The lovely lady who answered the phone said to try back on Monday as some people had until the end of Friday to put down their deposit and may cancel.
This is the place: www.marryus.org
It's just a civil ceremony but it is so much nicer than a sterile courtroom!
Thanks for your feedback ladies!! Much appreciated!
