Pomander/Kissing Balls
Since our wedding was not in a church, I did not want "pew bows" used during the ceremony. Instead I opted for pomander kissing balls. Unfortunately, all I could find at the store were the small kissing balls in white and pink and I wanted bigger ones in my wedding colors. So, I made them!
Materials:
- Seven bunches of silk flower stems with at least seven open buds on each bunch.
- Small circular styrofoam balls
- Hot glue gun
- Pins
- Ribbon
- Paint in the color of the flowers
Instructions:
These pomanders were relatively easy to make but they do wind up being quite costly. The way I made them required at least seven bunches of silk flowers per styrofoam ball. I got almost all of my supplies at the dollar store, so they worked out to be about $10 per pomander. However, mine are on the large side. They could be made with smaller styrofoam balls and less flowers for less money I'm sure.
The first thing I did was painted the styrofoam balls the color of the ribbon which in my case was wine. I really didn't have to do this step, but I didn't want the white of the styrofoam ball showing through.
Next, I snipped the flowers off the bunch leaving an inch or two of stem to be inserted into the styrofoam.
I then took the hot glue gun and put a bit of glue on the tip of each stem and pressed it into the styrofoam ball. I repeated this all over the ball in varying colors (white, red, and burgundy) until the whole thing was covered.
The final step was to cut some ribbon to insert into the ball for hanging. I found a small area to insert the ribbon on the styrofoam ball, took a couple of pins and pinned the ribbon down so that it formed a loop and then threw a bunch of hot glue on top. Originally, I cut my ribbon to be about 18" long so that when hung the ribbon would be 9" long. But, I found out the day before the wedding that the chairs I was using were rounded on the top so the ribbon had to be cut and tied. So, there are variations that can be done with the ribbon either leaving it open so it can be tied or making a loop out of it.
I really enjoyed making these pomanders and hope you will too!
