Cakes from my cousin's wedding
I thought I'd share some pics of my cousin's wedding cakes as I've never seen anything like them...

The bridal cake

Grooms cake is a Southern tradition. It's usually not as formal looking as the wedding cake and guests are given a slice of the grooms cake to take home. They're optional to have at a wedding.
You can probably google "grooms cake tradition" and find more, but that's what I know.
ETA: Those cakes are incredible!

To tell you the truth, we didn't get to taste the cake. We were jumping from table to table chatting with people we hadn't seen in years that we missed the cake being served. The weird part was that the cutting of the cake was the very first thing the bridal couple did when they entered the reception. It was explained to me that because it was so hot (we were in the tropics and we were kinda-sorta outside -- there was a roof but the sides were open) they wanted to cut the cake before the fondant melted. It's a shame that a beautiful cake like that wasn't shown for very long.

OH MY GOSH! That cake is gorgeous! It looks so real! Definitely not your average wedding cake. Extra points for style and creativity

How the heck do you even cut in to that?! I would have been terrified that it would come toppling down!!!
Beautiful job though!

Um.. When do you normally cut it? It must be different over there but we always cut it right before the meal at the begining of the reception.
... Actually now you've got it into my head that it'd be a better idea to have our cake on show during the meal and cut it afterwards! You do pay such a lot of money for it after all, might as well have it on show for longer than 5 mins! Plus we certainly don't have an issue with it being too hot!
It's a beautiful cake though! And I love the way they lit it up perfectly
I love all those rich jewel colours they had, everything looks so bright but elegant at the same time. Hard to pull off so many colours without it looking too childish but they did it perfectly!
You should email them now and tell them loads of people they've never met totally loved their wedding pictures!

Ann,
I'm sorry, the word "weird" was a poor word choice on my part. I should've used the word "interesting" instead. I didn't mean to imply that it was wrong to do it that way, just that I'd never seen it before.
Usually at the weddings we've attended, the cutting of the cake takes place after dinner or during a break in the after-dinner dancing. Since I'm not much of a dancer (except in elevators) we usually take this time to inspect and analyze the cake -- Cheryl is really into cake design. Luckily, as we were going down the stairs into the reception area, Cheryl immediately spotted the cake and was so impressed by it that she made a beeline towards the cake and took those pictures above. Had she not done so, we wouldn't have had the chance to take the pictures of the cakes later on.
At weddings we've attended where the cake was cut before, or even during, dinner it was usually after the toast(s).

So sad to think that people may have missed seeing it and taking pictures! It is the most amazing culinary creation I've ever seen! I can't even begin to imagine how such a cake was created and assembled--or, as mentioned, cut without tumbling apart! I'm assuming there was a dowel in the middle--but still, the way the pillows are curved up and apart! It's a feat in sweet engineering! I'm just, wow, blown away! The whole wedding looks like it was absolutely AMAZING!! Better than anything I've ever even seen on TV or by "Hollywood wedding" standards!
Gee, Steven, thanks for making all OUR weddings seem crummy in comparison! Just kidding. Now I see why it was worth flying halfway around the world for--who could miss that?! Wow!

I've never been to a wedding where the cake was cut at the beginning of the reception (unless the reception is only a cake-and-punch affair). Typically, the cake is cut after the toasting and right before the dancing starts (at least where I'm from - Northern California to give a frame of reference).

Jen,
You sure do have a way with words! Instead of editing other people's copy, you should create your own. You'd be so good at it!
