Default Careful - New Scam

I received this e-mail from a girlfriend of mine. It's her e-mail address, and I'm assuming it went out to everyone in her address book:

aHello ,
I am sorry I didn't inform you about my traveling to Europe for a program called Empowering Youth to Fight Racism, HIV/AIDS, Poverty and Lack of Education, the program is taking place in three major countries in Europe ,which are Germany, Austria and United Kingdom. It as been a very sad and bad moment for me now ,the present condition that I found myself is very hard for me to explain.I am really stranded in United Kingdom because I forgot my little bag in the Taxi where my money, passport, documents and other valuable things were kept on my way to the Hotel that am staying, I am facing a hard time here because I have no money on me.
I am now owning a hotel bill of $1500 and they wanted me to pay the bill soon or else they will have to seize my suitcase loggages and hand me over to the Hotel Management.

I need this help from you so that i could get back home, I want you to help me with the hotel bills and also i will need $1,200 to feed and help myself back home ,please kindly help me out with a sum of $2,700 to sort out my problems here? I need this help so much on time because of the situation of things is so terrible now and am in a tight conner, I don't even have any money to feed myself for a day, please understand how urgent i needed your help.

I am sending you this e-mail from the city called London in and I was giving only 30 mins to write and check your reply , I will appreciate what ever you can afford to send me for now and I promise to pay
back your money as soon as i return home, please send the money via western union money transfer , please email me back so that i can give you one of the Hotel Management name to receive the cash at the western union point.
Thanks

My friend is not in Europe, nor would she ever have a need to borrow money.

Nor would someone reasonably well-educated or English speaking ever use the phrase "a city called London."

There is also an IRS phishing scheme going around right now that says you're owed a refund. It's actually pretty realistic sounding, in the sense that it doesn't have the stilted language and spelling often found in these things; it sounds pretty official. It's still crap.

Some of these schemes are SO LAME, I have to wonder, who would ever fall for this?

I mean seriouisly, if your stranded in London, and you only have 30 minutes to get money, WHY ON EARTH would you EMAIL your friends asking for money? Why wouldn't you call them (collect of course)?

And yeah, don't you think that if you are close enough to the person that they are asking you for money, that you would KNOW if they were in London or not???

Probably the same people who believe they have some long-lost relative in Nigeria who just died and made them sole heir - all they have to do is hand over their bank account info.

Pretty much what I was thinking - like our friends would just take off for London and forget to tell us!

Luckily I have her husband's e-mail address so I forwarded it to him. I've never rec'd anything where someone has high-jacked an e-mail address like this.

The funny thing is my friend just had twins a few months ago, she's a stay at home Mom, and her husband owns a few car dealerships. Not only would she not be in London for those reasons, but she would be traveling first class if she were, lol.

Can someone tell me which hotel, especially in London, would let a guest stay a few days without paying FIRST? lol

We were talking about email scams yesterday in class and how some websites give you the tools and steps to set up your own phishing scam. They even have the entire myspace login page set up so you just set it up and have people re-routed to your site so they enter their login info. Its crazy!

Here is my girl's response:

Hi everyone, I am not in London, I am home doing laundry and playing with Joey & Jeannine .....someone got in my e-mail, sent that letter and blocked me out.

Apparently it was absolutely sent to everyone in her address book...

I've actually seen this one before!

I got it in my inbox from my old boss and thought nothing of it and opened it!

When I looked to see how many people it was sent to only my email address was in the slot. I'm glad I didn't get a virus.

What a scam!

Heather, do you know what the subject header of that email was? Did she open an email and it proceeded to infect her computer and send out the same email to everyone on her list? If that's the case, then I would like to know what to avoid/not open.

We have macs at home but I wouldn't want to get a virus on the pc at work ....... or um er ah ...... would I? How many days do you think we would be down and unable to work?

There are many a phisher out there that don't actually hack into an account ... the email simply looks like it's coming from that address.

The subject was: I need your help asap

It was directly from her yahoo account. She was locked out of it and had to open a new account to e-mail everyone to let us know that wasn't from her.

WOW I don't know anyone who speaks to there friends like this:

"It as been a very sad and bad moment for me now ,the present condition that I found myself is very hard for me to explain. . . . "

It would be a red flag for me.

WOW! That's freaky that it's coming from the actual email address-I wonder if it's a Yahoo thing or is it hapening with other addys as well?

Don't you sometimes just want to respond to these yo-yos with a something random and see how long they'll play ball?

I actually saw a newspaper article about this - the head of the NAACP (i think that's the right acronym) actually found out that the same thing was sent out from her email address. She had over 1000 contacts in her address book and about 400 messages asking her where to send money to help her out. Just goes to show you how many people actually responded to it.

It's not letting me look at the old thread! But now that you mention it, I think I DO remember something creepy...

I'll restrain myself and just continue composing responses in my head. The voices prefer that anyway.
