Default DIY Project: Bridesmaid's Gift Photo Boxes

Bridesmaid's Gift Photo Boxes

Submitted by: Julz518

Materials:
  • unfinished wooden box with a photoframe lid (Michael's for $2)
  • wood burner (Michael's for about $15)
  • medium-fine finish sand paper (depending on the quality of the wood)
  • stencils (I used wildfloers)
  • pencil
  • stain in color of choice
  • rag for staining
  • laquer finish
  • brush/sponge for laquer
  • favorite/funny picture of you and the bridesmaid

Instructions:

1) Remove photo backing and glass from the box. Set aside.
2) Sand the edges of the box (including the inside) until they are smooth (and you don't get any splinters)
3) Using the stencils and the pencil lightly trace your design (and the BM's name, if you wish) onto the box.
4) Using the wood burner, burn the design into the box by tracing over the pencil marks (if you've never used a wood burner before, follow the directions for pre-heating and choosing your tip.) In my opinion, tracing a little outside of the line and having uneven strokes gives the box more character.
5) Stain the box, including the inside and photo backing, following the directions on the stain. Let dry completely.
6) Laquer the box, including the inside and one side of the photo backing, following the directions on the laquer. Try not to get the laquer on the box hinges. Let dry completely.
6) (Optional) If needed, sand down any thick patches of laquer to give a smooth finish, and apply one additional light coat of lauqer.
7) Insert glass, photo, and phot backing into the frame top.

Optional Wrapping: kraft paper and wraphia
Optional Card: plain white recycled notecards, corners punched with a decorative corner punch, wraphia threaded through holes punched along top edge. I used the following poems:

For the MOHs:

You have always been there, more than just a friend.
You know just who I am and everywhere I've been.
You're the one who I can turn to, any hour of the day.
Seems, I only have to think of you and you'll be on your way.
No matter where life takes me, no matter where I roam.
When I'm with you my friend, my heart feels right at home.
So on my wedding day, I will need you more than ever.
Please say you'll be my Maid/Matron of Honor.... and my friend forever.

For the Bridesmaids:

The day, the dress, the bride, the groom;
The joy, the tears, will all come so soon.
Professing true love to my husband-to-be;
with family and friends all watching me.
I hope the sun will be shining down;
keep your fingers crossed that I'll fit my gown.
But there's one more thing that needs to be;
and thats to have you standing with me.
Name, will you be my Bridesmaid?
