Hello Lou:

Great question! Friday night weddings are gaining in popularity for a few reasons:

1. They can be less expensive than Saturday night weddings, in some cases. Some reception halls invite wedding business by offering their sites for 15% to 30% less than their Saturday night packages -- DEPENDING ON THE PACKAGE YOU SELECT AND THE INDIVIDUAL CHOICES YOU MAKE. So that means it's not an across-the-board rule that a Friday night wedding will always be cheaper. Some sites have recognized the trend and done away with their discounts, owing to supply and demand. So this remains as a possibility in the budget world.
2. Some brides and grooms like the idea of having the wedding on Friday night, so that they can either depart for their honeymoon on the Saturday (perhaps getting one of those fly-on-Saturday-and-save-$ packages) OR they choose to spend the entirety of the wedding weekend with all of their frends and family who have flown in for the wedding. They plan wedding weekend activities like picnics and sporting events, family dinners and cocktail parties, making that weekend more like a family reunion since everyone gets together so rarely.
3. Friday nights might be the only dates open at their chosen sites, since so many of the top places are booked 2 years in advance. So they might not want to wait.
4. Some vendors charge less for Friday night weddings, since that allows them to get an extra big event into their weekend income.
5. A holiday weekend might mean they have Friday off of work, so that's convenient for all of their guests.
