Save the Dates have become a courtesy to wedding guests, since so many of us have family and friends who live far away and would have to travel to attend the wedding. Sending a Save the Date allows these guests to get advance notice of the wedding date -- earlier than the 6-8 weeks notice they get when invitations arrive -- so that they can make their travel arrangements, perhaps get better airfare or hotel room bookings, and also to make sure they don't miss the wedding because they already planned a family vacation of their own. Especially if the wedding will be during the summer months, busy fall months when kids have a lot of school activities, and holiday weekends, it's best to alert guests way in advance that there's a fun and important family event on the horizon!
