Default How much for makeup?

I want to have makeup done for my wedding, as I am one of those girls who can do nothing but her simple, everyday, slap on some mascara, makeup routine. I live in Wisconsin, and was wondering what was considered to be a median price for having makeup done. I want something natural and earthy, noting terribly dramatic. I have been quoted a price and have a feeling it may be pretty high considering my location.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!
Well, seeing that you are in Wisconsin, I wouldn't expect the price range to be the same as Los Angeles or New York, but before questioning quotes, here are a few things to consider:

1) How much experience does the artist have?
If they have only been doing weddings for a couple of months or just a couple of years, then they shouldn't be very expensive at all seeing that they are quite new to the business. However, if you are quoting a senior makeup artist who has been doing weddings for 6+ years, and it's quite possibly their full-time job, then you are not only paying for the makeup application, but also experience and expertise, which will run a bit higher than the prices of a newer artist.

2) How far is the artist traveling?
If the artist is more than 20 miles from you, chances are travel is included into the price, which would drive it up higher. You should ask about that just to make sure.

3) What does their work look like?
If you have taken a look at the artists work and it makeup looks clean, pretty, fresh and a little better than natural, that's exactly what you want and it might cost just a little more. Sometimes, doing more "simple" makeup is harder and time consuming then a more glamourous look because the skin must be fully concealer and blended to look natural, eyeshadows and blush must be blended too and everything must be pricise. (On looks with smokier eyes and such you can get away with less precision on the eyeliner or lipliner because it's usually blended with darker colors and won't be seen so clearly as eyeliner on a natural look would). If the artist is skilled at what they do, and they get alot of business then they too would charge a little bit higher.

4) Do they have credible references?
If the artist can supply you with a couple of phone numbers or e-mail address of happy clients, then that should speak more to you than anything. This is one of the most important days of your life, and all eyes will be on you so make sure they have had successful weddings and a few happy brides before considering them.

5) Do they use quality cosmetics and products that ensure the makeup will last?
If you have read some of my past posts, there are some great products that help the staying power of makeup and also protect from smudging and creasing. It's imperative that the artists you talk to use them, or can provide it for you upon request.

6) Always ask if the price includes a preview
You never want to have your makeup done by someone unless you have a preview first. It is too stressful for you as well as the artist to put together a perfect look with only a couple of hours.

All in all, especially things with hair and makeup, you get what you pay for. Sure, there are many new artists who will do your makeup for $25, but will it last? Are their products "flash safe"? Do they use sealants/sprays to ensure your cosmetics staying power? Ask these questions and call about 4-5 artists in your area. You will see a few prices and then you can correctly gauge what a good median price for your specific area is. I wish you the very best of luck, and congrats!!
