Default Destination Wedding in Dominican Republic

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this site and recently engaged. We want to do a destination wedding with about 30 family/friends and are considering the DR. Anyone been to or had a destination wedding here? Any suggestions, advice, etc.?

Thanks!

Default Destination Wedding Expert on PASH

Hi,

My name is Lindsay the Resident Expert here at PASH, maybe I can help you with some thoughts and ideas from weddings that we have handle in the Dominican Republic.

First of all, you have to ask yourself a few questions regarding the kind of group experience you want to have. The reason I say this because there is two main points with Dominican Republic wedding groups.

1. What kind of beach you like? I know this sounds silly but there are parts of the Dominican Republic that does not have the cleaner tropical blue waters that you see in the pictures or the white sand beach. Some people want to see those blue waters, while others could care less. If this is something that drew you to Dominican Republic, then Punta Cana is the best area for you to go to. Depending upon what time of year you could have some questionable water quality on the north and south part of the island.

2. This one is a main concern for groups, the resort layout. You see, the resorts that where first built in the Punta Cana area went with a spread out low rise buildings housing 4 - 8 rooms scattered throughout the property. Yes, it is a different kind of resort but the problem with groups is that we cannot say 100% yes that you are all going to be in the same area. And with some of these have 1000 rooms, that is allot of little buildings around. There has been times where the wedding party is scattered on all four corners. Very hard for people to meet up and to be on time. One large wedding I traveled with recently constantly had members getting lost. There was a bridesmaid we sent out a search party for. Unfortunately these are some very beautiful resorts, but with groups this room placement seems to stress out the bridal couple more. You can always transfer after the wedding day to another resort in the area, to honeymoon.

I know some of that sounds petty but any little bit of stress that we can not put on you, is worth it.

Now don't forget the marriage requirements because those need to be done in advance. We really need to use a service to make sure that everything is documented correctly.

Lastly, before I create a novel here! LOL Wedding Packages. Depending upon what you are looking for I have to say over the past few years our company's favorite down there is the Sunscape resort. The wedding package is excellent with much more then others, and they really do go out of their way to care about the couple. They have also been very good with our bridal couples regarding the room placements and any special request, which is a very nice bonus. Plus it helps that you are working with professional people.

The other resorts that we have enjoyed working with over the past couple of years, The Princess Resorts, Paradisus resorts, Ocean Blue and Palladium resorts. We just had our first wedding at the Majestic Resort, which I must admit was rough on one of staff members here at first, but later on seemed to work out the kinks. Normally we don't work with newer resorts that are not a chain for about a year, however the bride really wanted this one and we where honest with her stating it was our first time with them. They really enjoyed it, loved the resort and are looking to go back with their friends and family again in March.

Just be careful to get the most for your wedding and travel dollars. It may look like I am only suggesting a select few resorts down there but that is because they have proven to us their professional manner to us over the years. After doing this for 10 years this August, we have seen some winner and losers!

Best Wishes on your special day!!!!

Take Care,
Lindsay
