Default Save the dates

I know someone posted this question, but I can't for the life of me find it or the answer. When should we send Save the Dates?

And are you sending save the date cards or letters? Someone told me that I could send save the date email?

They should go out anywhere from six months to a year before your wedding date, depending on whether you'll have a lot of guests who need to make travel arrangements.

We sent a letter and a magnet for the fridge. The letter contained hotels in the area, things to do, the history of our ceremony & reception location, and stated that a formal invitation is to follow.
