The wedding isn't the only once-in-a-lifetime experience. Adventure honeymoons are the hottest trend in honeymoons right now, with couples opting for excitement and the challenge of outdoor sports rather than a cruise or other sightseeing excursion.

What exactly is an "adventure honeymoon?" It's an "active" trip with great flexibility: you can do as little or as much as you like. Couples ski, bike, or nature watch while roughing it, traveling in the lap of luxury, or somewhere in between. A number of options and companies can custom tailor your honeymoon.

Perhaps the most "traditional" adventure is a safari honeymoon. International Ventures specializes in African safari vacations. Heidi Beaumont, IV's managing director, says demand for safari travel has increased among honeymooners and half the company's trips are honeymoons. Though the company offers some two week all-inclusive trips for $2,000, Beaumont says the sky's the limit. "A couple could spend about $4,000 to $5,000 per person, all inclusive, including airfare from New York," she says.

While that sounds like quite an investment, newlyweds certainly get their money's worth: some of the world's most spectacular scenery and wildlife. Destinations include national gardens and game parks, and white sand beaches in Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa. The company can even arrange your wedding on the islands of Seychelles or Mauritius in the Indian Ocean.

A name synonymous with safaris is Abercrombie & Kent. The luxury outfitter travels to every corner of the world and offers a variety of options for the honeymooner -- all-inclusive, escorted, independent, and yes, "economy" options. A&K is renowned for its trips to see the "Big Five": the lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo.

An idyllic island, beaches, and some water sports thrown in may be more to your liking. A very popular spot with adventure-seeking honeymooners is Costa Rica, says Susan Breslow Sardone, the honeymoon guide at About.com. "Prices are still affordable, it's not over-touristed, it's pretty safe, and a couple can really get the feel of a country that hasn't yet turned into Disney World," she says. Honeymooners go for Costa Rica's wildlife, tropical rainforests by the Pacific, some of the best scuba diving in the world, as well as the challenge of climbing Mount Chirripo, the highest peak in Central America.

Europe may not sound all that exotic, but a walking or biking tour through the countryside puts a new spin on the old country. California-based touring company Backroads offers more than 150 trips to Italy, Scandinavia, Asia and the U.S. Most importantly, it ranks its trips from ‘easy' to ‘challenging.' Backroads can arrange every detail, right down to airfare, bike and equipment rental and hotel and inn reservations.

For anyone heading into the uncharted waters of adventure travel, two resources are essential for planning: the Great Outdoor Recreation Pages (www.gorp.com) and the Green Travel Network (www.greentravel.com). Both offer tour operator listings, trip ideas, as well as forums where you can hear other travelers post their experiences and recommendations.
